In Amun-Re, players are members of a dynasty of pharaohs, fighting each other for precious land to secure their monumental legacy. This game is heavy by Knizia standards. It has multiple phases per round and two distinct eras, where the players’ physical presence on the board is wiped halfway through the game. At the heart of Amun-Re is its fixed placement auction. This is where players have to push others out of specific regions of the board as a way to raise their bid for the land. A bunch of action cards are interlaced between the rounds that can alter scoring conditions, and an offering phase adds another layer of combative player interaction.The 20th Anniversary version of Amun-Re is pure majesty. The Vincent Dutrait artwork, coupled with the magnificent production by Alley Cat Games, has undoubtedly made this the heirloom version of Amun-Re.Like other auction games, its tension is contingent on the players willingness to jostle for space. Amun-Re is very group dependent as a result.
